Treatment of migraine with Neurofeedback

Conference: How to get rid of a migraine permanently thanks to neurofeedback ?

Subtitles in English are available.

Migraines consist of crises or attack with intense headaches that occur in a repeated way. They can graduate from moderate to severe intensity and last from hours to several days.

According to the OMS, migraines affect 15% of the adult population all around the world and mostly women (20% vs 10% of men). In 90% of cases, migraines begin before the age of 40 and lead to a deterioration in the quality of life of those concerned. There are very few treatments for migraines, and none that are definitively effective over the long term: except neurofeedback, which makes them disappear.

Neurofeedback : best treatment for migraine and headaches

Long-term effective solution without medication

Neurofeedback is an innovative, non-medicated method for migraines treatment in an effective and long-lasting way, regardless of the severity or frequency of the crises. It is not new and it has an effect on the brain’s ability to regulate its arousal states. This is why neurofeedback has been proven efficient on different symptoms and disorders such as migraines. Most of the time, it’s the only alternative to medication because neurofeedback helps reduce brain overactivity and irritability responsible for migraines.

Regarding migraine treatments, neurofeedback has many additional advantages compared to medication : no side effects, no risk of addiction… and lasting results, as migraines disappear completely and naturally.

Many studies have proven the benefit of neurofeedback as a solution for migraines and headaches :

Note : When our customers have a migraine on the day of their neurofeedback session, they are asked to come in and not cancel it so that we can stop the migraine as soon as possible. Every time, clients are surprised because in less than 30 minutes their migraine has disappeared. And that occurs even if they’re just starting the treatment.

EEG of a woman who suffers severe migraines

This is the EEG of a woman who suffers migraines several times a month : you can see on some lines the signal is “sharper” or “spikier” than on others : in this case it is not muscle tension or movements but real irritability of the neurons. She had chronic and severe migraine and non of the previous treatments were effective.

Preventive migraine and headaches solutions

Migraines have in common that they are triggered by a change in state and the system can’t cope with this change. The list below shows you what you can do to avoid triggering migraines or headaches. It’s is simple elements of everyday life you can act on naturally :

Migraine causes vary from one person to another. They are inconsistent within the same individual, and sometimes need to be combined. These factors can change throughout life. Also the symptoms of migraines can vary, with or without aura for example.

In addition, it is important to know that genetic factors and a non-healthy lifestyle can also have a great influence in migraine attack occurrence.

Other way to get rid of migraines

Medication treatment for migraines

The medication most often used in migraines is:

Whatever the option, one should not exceed 8 days of treatment per month to avoid the risk of medication overuse headaches (and stomach, liver problems…).

Therapies and Stanton Method

Carbohydrates play a role in migraines, they are initiators. In the body, carbohydrates transform into glucose. This glucose enters the cells, eliminates water and sodium which causes an electrolyte disturbance. As migraineurs have a genetically reduced ability to restore their sodium storage, the consumption of exogenous glucose generates an exaggerated response and severely disrupts the sodium electrolyte balance.

Stanton Migraine Method is dedicated to help those with migraines gain greater control of their lives without the use of medications. The protocol focuses on the diet (shifting to a high fat, low carbohydrate diet) that is low in sugar and eliminates key things known to trigger migraines.

It is used as a treatment for migraines but also prevent it.

What is a migraine

Migraine or headache : How to make the distinction?

Migraines can be of moderate to severe intensity and last from a few hours to several days. They can occur from once a year to several times during a week. There are also migraines with aura, which concern 20 to 30% of people experiencing migraines (visual, sensory, language/speech, or disturbances of motricity.

Different types of migraines

Mechanisms of migraine and headache

Migraine and brain regions implication

How does a migraine happen ? What are the cause ? During a migraine attack, different areas of the brain become activated (it’s the migraine stream). A lot of fMRI study have been done. These parts plays a role in the process describe below :

The main mechanism of migraines

The brain does not feel pain, what the person feels is pain from the blood vessels.

Migraine aura

A particular characteristic of migraines is that they can be with or without aura. The migraine aura is caused by an electrical wave in the brain which is a spreading cortical depression. This cortical depression produces changes in neuronal activity and blood vessels.

FAQ

The best treatment is always the one tailored to your needs and personalized to your symptoms. That’s why we do a qEEG Brainmap assessment first to identify your difficulties at source (the brain). Your results enable us to etablish a list of recommendations tailored to you, whether it’s Neurofeedback sessions, consulting a neurologist, taking the right medication, implementing daily routines/changing your lifestyle…

At this time, only neurofeedback is able to permanently eradicate migraines non-invasively. Medication is a temporary solution, acting on symptoms once the migraine is present.

There are many causes of migraine (listed above), and it’s very important to identify them in order to determine the best course of treatment.

Migraines are not immediately life-threatening, although an attack can be extremely disabling. But it’s best not to let it irritate your brain. A brain in good shape is a brain that functions well, and this ensures a pleasant daily life: quality sleep, energy, excellent cognitive capacities (concentration, memory…), good emotional management and a stable mood.
